Left Chest vs Large Embroidery: Sizes and Placement Explained

October 2, 2026 · By EMBROI IT Team

"How big should my logo be?" is the question we hear most. The honest answer is that it depends on where it's going. Here are rough sizes to start from.

Common embroidery sizes

These are typical ranges, not strict rules. Garment size and design shape matter too.

  • Left chest: usually about 3 to 4 inches wide. It sits high on the left side of a polo or shirt.
  • Cap front: usually around 2 inches tall, depending on the cap style.
  • Sleeve: small, often 2 to 3 inches, for a logo or a name.
  • Full back: commonly around 10 to 12 inches wide, for jackets and big team designs.

Why size changes the job

Embroidery isn't like printing. A design isn't just scaled up or down, it's rebuilt for its size. A 3-inch logo can use thin satin borders and small text. At 10 inches, the same design needs different stitch lengths, more underlay and stronger planning so it doesn't pucker or look stretched.

That's why we digitize for the finished size you tell us, and why you should confirm the size before you order.

How size affects price

At EMBROI IT, pricing follows size. Designs up to 5 inches, which includes the typical left-chest logo, start at $10. Designs larger than 5 inches are $25. See the embroidery pricing page for current rates.

Small things that matter

Tiny text: keep it readable. If your logo has a tagline in very small letters, tell us. We may suggest dropping it or making it bolder at small sizes.

Placement: check with your decorator about exactly where the logo will sit on the garment, since that affects the best size.

Caps: the front panel is curved and short. See our cap and hat embroidery page for what works well.
